Starting Retinol? Here's What to Expect!

When introducing retinol into your skincare routine, it's normal to experience a few initial reactions, such as mild redness, dryness, and peeling. These are completely normal and actually indicate that the retinol is working to renew your skin! 🌟

Why are these reactions so important?

  1. Skin Renewal: Retinol accelerates cell turnover, helping to shed old, damaged skin and revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. This process can cause temporary flaking or dryness, but it’s a sign your skin is adjusting to this potent ingredient.
  2. Increased Sensitivity: As your skin adapts to retinol, it becomes more sensitive, especially to the sun. This heightened sensitivity is a sign that the retinol is penetrating deeply, working to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
  3. Improved Results Over Time: The initial adjustment period is crucial. Once your skin gets used to retinol, you’ll notice smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin. Trust the process! 🙌

Remember, these reactions are temporary and manageable with proper hydration, sun protection, and a gradual introduction of retinol. Always start slow, listen to your skin, and enjoy the journey to healthier, glowing skin! 💧💖

Chemical peels are a popular and effective cosmetic treatment designed to improve the appearance and health of the skin. By applying a chemical solution to the skin, a controlled exfoliation process is initiated, which helps to remove dead skin cells, promote cell turnover, and reveal fresher, more radiant skin beneath. But what specific skin conditions can be treated with chemical peels? Let's explore the diverse benefits of this versatile treatment. Hyperpigmentation Hyperpigmentation - including sun spots, age spots, and melasma - can be significantly improved with chemical peels. The treatment works by breaking down the excess melanin in the skin, leading to a more even skin tone. Regular chemical peels can lighten dark spots and reduce the visibility of hyperpigmentation, providing a more uniform complexion. This treatment can be particularly beneficial when combined with other melasma therapies, such as microneedling. Acne and Acne Scarring Chemical peels are particularly effective in treating acne and the scars left behind by acne breakouts. By exfoliating the top layers of skin, chemical peels help to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and decrease the appearance of active acne. They also stimulate collagen production, which can help to minimize the appearance of acne scars, resulting in smoother, clearer skin. Fine Lines and Wrinkles Chemical peels can help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting the production of new skin cells and collagen. The exfoliation process removes the outer layer of skin where fine lines and wrinkles are most visible, revealing smoother skin underneath. Over time, this can lead to a reduction in the depth and severity of wrinkles, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. Rough Skin Texture Uneven or rough skin texture can be effectively addressed with chemical peels. The exfoliation process smooths the surface of the skin, enhancing its texture and making it feel softer and more refined. This is particularly beneficial for those with rough patches, bumpy skin, or enlarged pores. Dull Skin If your skin looks dull and lacks radiance, a chemical peel can help to revive its natural glow. By removing the dead skin cells that contribute to a lackluster appearance, chemical peels reveal fresher, brighter skin. This rejuvenation process can make your skin look more vibrant and healthy. Sun Damage Prolonged sun exposure can lead to various forms of skin damage, including sunspots, fine lines, and an overall uneven skin tone. Chemical peels can help to reverse some of these effects by promoting the turnover of damaged skin cells and encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin. Regular treatments can significantly improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin. Conclusion Chemical peels are a versatile and effective treatment for a wide range of skin conditions, from acne and hyperpigmentation to fine lines and sun damage. By promoting exfoliation and stimulating collagen production, chemical peels can significantly improve the overall health and appearance of your skin. At BeautyEtc Skin Clinic, we offer a variety of chemical peels tailored to meet your specific skin needs. Our skilled practitioners will assess your skin condition and recommend the most suitable peel to help you achieve your skincare goals. Experience the transformative power of chemical peels and reveal your best skin yet. Ready to rejuvenate your skin with a chemical peel? The hallmark of a youthful appearance is bright, glowing, smooth skin. While medical grade skin care, neurotoxins, microneedling, scrubs and peels can help you meet that goal, it’s great to have a variety of tools in your cosmetic toolbox to choose from. Dermaplaning is one more treatment that can help you meet your cosmetic goals. What is dermaplaning? First and foremost, dermaplaning is a deep exfoliation treatment. However, unlike traditional exfoliation techniques, this treatment uses a sharp surgical scalpel to physically remove the top layer of skin. What are the benefits of dermaplaning? Benefits of dermaplaning include: Renewed complexion Deeper product penetration for serums and creams Smoother, more evenly toned skin Removal of dead, pore-clogging skin Removal of peach fuzz Smoother make-up application Reduced acne scarring Minimized fine lines What is involved in the actual treatment? Preparation : In preparation for the treatment, the skin is cleaned with a gentle cleanser to remove any make-up, dirt, and oil from the skin. Then a gentle toner is applied to ensure that the skin is even and unnecessary skin oils are removed. Dermaplane : Just prior to dermaplaning, a special oil is applied to the skin. Then a sterile scalpel is scraped gently over your face at a 45-degree angle. The skin is pulled taut and the scalpel is used in an upward motion in small sections until your entire face has been exfoliated. Usually, this part of the treatment takes less than 20 minutes. If the words “sharp” and “scalpel” scare you, have no fear - in the hands of a skilled professional the procedure is minimally invasive and painless. In fact, it is one of the simplest, quickest and least painful cosmetic procedures. The treatment takes less than 20 minutes. Following the treatment, the skin will be rinsed and moisturized. As with every treatment, you will be sent home with post care instructions. How often should this be done? Consistency is key to ensure optimal results from dermaplaning. We recommend a dermaplaning treatment once a month. This ensures that old cells are removed and new healthy cells are visible. This is particularly important when using a retinol. If you’re ready for the smooth, glowing skin dermaplaning can deliver, then

A radiant, youthful complexion is a universal desire. Many skincare products and treatments claim to turn back the clock on aging, but what is the real science behind youthful skin? The answer lies in one of your skin's most crucial components: collagen. In this blog post, we'll delve deep into the world of collagen, examining its role in maintaining youthful skin and exploring ways to boost collagen production for a more youthful appearance. Understanding Collagen: Your Skin's Best Friend: Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, and it serves as a vital structural component in the skin, among other tissues. It provides strength and elasticity, helping your skin look firm, plump, and youthful. Think of collagen as the scaffolding that holds your skin up. The Collagen Life Cycle: As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, leading to a gradual loss of skin elasticity and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Understanding this life cycle is key to comprehending why skin ages and how to slow down the process. Factors That Affect Collagen Production: Several factors can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and hinder its production. These include UV exposure, smoking, an unhealthy diet, and genetics. Discussing these factors can help readers make informed decisions about their lifestyle choices. Boosting Collagen Production: The good news is that you can take steps to boost collagen production and maintain youthful skin. Some effective strategies include: Topical Collagen-Boosting Skincare: Explore skincare products containing ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and peptides, which can stimulate collagen production. Healthy Diet: Discuss the importance of a diet rich in collagen-boosting foods like berries, leafy greens, and lean proteins. Collagen Supplements: Explain the role of collagen supplements and their potential benefits in promoting skin health. Microneedling and Laser Therapies: Introduce these cosmetic dermatology procedures that can stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture. The Role of Hydration: Hydration is also crucial for maintaining collagen and youthful skin. Describe how staying adequately hydrated can prevent collagen breakdown and support overall skin health. Patient Success Stories: Share real-life patient success stories, complete with before-and-after photos, to showcase the effectiveness of collagen-boosting treatments and the impact on a person's appearance. Conclusion: In the quest for youthful skin, understanding the science behind collagen is essential. Collagen isn't just a buzzword in skincare; it's a fundamental element that contribute.

By ZO® Skin Health As summer starts to come to an end and temperatures begin to cool, plump and hydrated skin will probably be your primary goal in the fall and winter seasons. But before you begin the search for the perfect moisturizers for you daily and nightly routine, take a moment to learn their true impact on your skin. CONVENTIONAL MOISTURIZERS Many over-the-counter moisturizers use words like "nourishing," "gentle," "comforting," and are usually well tolerated by anyone. Nevertheless, while you may experience these benefits immediately after applying, moisturizers are often only a quick solution to what may be a bigger problem. With daily application, moisturizers could actually be harming your skin. Most conventional moisturizers contain the same components present in the skin: water, lipids and proteins. When applied, they create a high level of moisture saturation on the skin’s surface, which leads to a false sense of hydration that causes your skin to stop producing its natural hydration from within. Skin’s barrier function can become compromised, leading to weak and sensitized skin. Since your skin is not producing its own hydration, it can feel dry and flaky too, which then leads to you applying more moisturizer to compensate, and so the cycle continues. This is why many women are dependent on moisturizers. EXCESS HYDRATION Over time, misusing moisturizers can also begin to interfere with your skin’s natural exfoliation process. Every day, your skin naturally renews itself to exfoliate dead skin cells and reveal glowing, healthy skin. But an overapplication of synthetic hydration can compact dead skin cells on the skin’s surface instead of exfoliating off naturally. This again may lead to your skin appearing dull and dry, as well as weak and sensitive. Conventional moisturizers do more harm than good, and while they can provide a quick fix, they don’t offer long-term benefits. ZO® Skin Health has developed a line of "functional hydrators" that are uniquely engineered to restore a compromised skin barrier, accelerate skin hydration from within and support your skin’s natural recovery process. Conventional moisturizers do more harm than good, and while they can provide a quick fix, they don’t offer long-term benefits. FUNCTIONAL HYDRATORS ZO® Hydration + Calming products are recommended to only be used temporarily to hydrate and calm the skin when undergoing anticipated reactions from actives, such as retinol, or in-office procedures, like peels and lasers—without compromising your results. The right hydrator will depend on your skin type and skin concerns: Renewal Crème is a lightweight hydrator for mild dryness. Oat kernel and plankton extract soothe and reduce redness and a whisper of retinol stimulates skin renewal while supporting your skin’s hydration levels. Recovery Crème is a richer, emollient choice for moderate dryness. Squalane and shea butter deeply hydrate and provide a protective barrier to protect against trans-epidermal water loss to soothe and reduce redness. Hydrating Crème provides retinol-free hyd

What is Retinol? Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A , which plays a key role in helping cells regenerate, repair, and turn over. How does retinol work? There are two main mechanisms at work: cell turnover and increased collagen levels. The skin’s ability to shed the layer of dead cells on the surface naturally decreases with age, which can make the skin look dull. Retinol increases cell turnover, which makes the skin look brighter and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Retinols also increase the amount of collagen present in the skin and decrease the amount of enzymes, including collagenases that threaten to break down collagen fibers. What are the side effects? Retinol promotes cell turnover, which is part of what makes it so effective but also what may lead to flaky and dry skin . This side effect happens because retinol loosens the connection between the skin cells, and that loosening can increase flakiness. How can I prevent side effects? Moisturize before applying retinol, then add another layer of moisturizer on top. Also, avoid using retinol every day right off the bat — you’ll want to increase use as your skin builds tolerance. But if your skin doesn’t seem to be adapting after two weeks of use, you should discontinue use and consult with your cosmetic provider. What is the dose? Use a pea-sized drop of retinol two or three nights a week to start. If your skin seems to be tolerating it well after two weeks, try using it every other night for another week or two, eventually working your way up to daily application. Pay attention to how your skin reacts and adjust the frequency of use accordingly. Should I stop using it in the summer? Retinol can become deactivated when exposed to sunlight, and it can make the skin more susceptible to sunburn, especially during the first six to eight weeks of use. But any suggestion that you should halt retinol use during the sunny summer months isn’t true. With good sun protection, it is safe and preferable to use year round. Will it damage my skin over time? You may have heard that extended retinol use can cause the skin to thin and the skin barrier to degrade as a result of increased cell turnover, but that’s a myth. You don’t need to worry about retinol causing permanent damage. How long will it take to see results? Unfortunately, it’s not realistic to expect to see results overnight. t can take a while for the benefits to come through. We recommend committing to at least 12 weeks of use to see results. Retinol comes in many types, doses and delivery systems - depending on your cosmetic needs. Some types are meant for short term use and some for long term. At BeautyEtc. Skin Clinic we offer several options that will fit your specific needs, along with ongoing support to answer any questions or issues that come up. Book your consultation appointment today!

The warm summer months bring us joy, adventure, and plenty of outdoor activities. However, prolonged exposure to the sun's harsh rays can take a toll on our skin, leaving it dull, dehydrated, and prone to damage. Fortunately, modern aesthetic treatments offer a variety of options to help your skin recover and rejuvenate after the summer sun. In this blog, we'll explore five aesthetic treatments that can revitalize your skin, including chemical peels, micro-needling, skincare products, wrinkle relaxers, and dermal filler injections. VI Peel Chemical peels are a popular treatment option to address a range of skin concerns, including sun damage. A VI Peel is a medium-depth peel that penetrates your top layer of skin (epidermis) reaching into the dermis and underneath. The peel works by exfoliating your skin and stimulating the production of new proteins, healing the skin after prolonged sun and environmental exposure. After a series of 3 treatments, your skin will look brighter, smoother, and more youthful. Micro-needling with stem cells Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is another effective treatment to repair and rejuvenate sun-damaged skin. This procedure involves the use of a device with tiny needles that create controlled micro-injuries on the skin's surface. As the skin heals, collagen production is stimulated, leading to improved texture and elasticity. Micro-needling can help reduce the appearance of sunspots, scars, and fine lines, giving your skin a healthier and more youthful appearance. Adding STEM cells will increase the collagen production by 300%. Skin Care Products: An essential aspect of skin recovery is the consistent use of high-quality skincare products. After exposure to sun and free radicals, your skin needs hydration, nourishment, and repair. Look for products containing antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C and E to help repair damage and promote collagen production. Sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF is crucial to prevent further sun damage. At BeautyEtc. Skin Clinic we recommend a ZO® Skin Health skin care protocol, as it contains all the powerhouse ingredients you need to give hydration, stimulate collagen production, and neutralize free radicals. Wrinkle reducers such as Dysport®: Otherwise known as neurotoxins, these work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. This treatment can help refresh your appearance and provide a rested, rejuvenated look. Dermal Filler Injections: Dermal fillers are a versatile treatment option to restore volume, hydration, and elasticity to sun-damaged skin. They can be used to address areas that have lost volume, such as the cheeks and lips, as well as to soften deep lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers contain substances like hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain moisture in the skin, enhancing its plumpness and radiance. Results are immediate, and with proper care, they can last several months to a year. As the sun-kissed days of summer fade away, it's important to give your skin the attention it deserves. Aesthetic treatments like chemical peels, micro-needling, skincare products, Botox, and dermal filler injections offer effective solutions to reverse sun damage and restore your skin's vitality. At BeautyEtc. Skin Clinic we have everything you need to develop the best treatment plan for your unique needs and embark on a journey toward healthier, rejuvenated skin. Remember, a combination of treatments, along with a diligent skincare routine, will help your skin recover from the summer sun and maintain its youthful glow.

Neurotoxin is a protein that is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. By injecting it into a muscle, it blocks signals from the nerves that cause the muscle to contract, and when muscles can’t contract, the dynamic wrinkles caused by facial movements relax and soften, allowing your face to look smoother. If you have received a neurotoxin injection to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, you are aware that it doesn’t last forever. Typically results last from 3 to 4 months then it’s time for another treatment. The body breaks down the protein over time, but how quickly this happens depends on a variety of factors including metabolic rate and exposure to environmental toxins. Here are five tips to help you get the most from your neurotoxin treatment. Stay out of the sun It’s no secret that sun damage can lead to premature aging by breaking down your collagen and damaging skin cells deep within the dermal layers. First, Botox is ineffective against wrinkles and lines caused by sun damage as they aren’t caused by muscle movements. On top of this, sun damage causes an inflammatory response within the cells which can also break down your Botox, reducing its effectiveness and minimizing its lifespan. No high intensity workouts High intensity workouts are designed to boost your metabolism in order to burn calories and build muscle more quickly. By raising your metabolic rate, you may be causing your body to metabolize the Botox more quickly so it breaks down sooner than expected. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t exercise or even do intensive workouts, just integrate more low to moderate training into your workouts. Moisturize Using a good-quality facial moisturizer such as ZO Skin Health® is essential to keeping your skin smooth. Moisturizers containing collagen and hyaluronic acid can be particularly beneficial by keeping your skin looking plump and healthy and reducing how quickly it breaks down the Botox within your facial muscles. No smoking Smoking, vaping, and anything with nicotine causes your collagen to break down, damages your skin cells, and reduces the effectiveness of your Botox injections. Not only will the original dynamic wrinkles appear more quickly, but smoking and vaping cause fine lines around the mouth and eyes that future injections can’t fix. Consider taking a Zinc supplement Zinc is known as a “Botox booster” based on a few studies . Zinc has been found to be effective in extending the effects of botulinum toxin injections up to 30 percent. According to the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology , the results of the clinical trial of the drug showed that almost 92 percent of the patients who took Zinc reported that the effects of their Botox treatments were noticed more quickly and lasted several weeks longer. Zinc is to be taken four days prior to treatment with a dose of two capsules daily: one taken in the morning and the other in the evening. The intake of Zinc before and at the time of your injections controls the quantity of zinc and phytase in the body, which helps in enhancing the effects of treatment.

Do you suffer from cold sores? Patients that have a history of cold sores must let their provider know before their scheduled appointment for any filler treatment that may be in or around the lip area. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have dermal filler treatment if you have a history of cold sores. Simply keep these two things in mind: DO NOT have a dermal filler treatment if you have an active cold sore Be sure to take a prophylactic dose of an anti-viral medication before the treatment to significantly reduce the chances of having an outbreak after the procedure. Even if you haven’t had an outbreak in a very long time, please let your provider know ahead of time so they can prescribe the antiviral medication before the treatment. As aesthetic providers we want to be sure that we take the absolute best care of you and this helps us do just that!

Do you wake up one morning, look in the mirror and think you have aged overnight? This is what I hear most commonly from my clients. The truth is - the aging process starts when we are in our 30’s! It is also multifactorial - affecting the facial bones, volume, and skin integrity. How does aging affect the facial bone structure? As we age, our jaw bone shrinks and retracts. Our chin recedes. The eye sockets become wider, longer and larger - causing the dreaded tear trough otherwise known as bags under the eyes. How does aging affect facial volume? When we are younger, we have full fat pads under our skin that lift our cheeks, temples and jawline. These deep fat pads fade away as we age, causing the face to appear to have fallen down and forward - causing pre-jowling and a disappearing jawline. How does aging affect the skin? Now let’s look at the skin. Collagen and elastin are essential ingredients for youthful, firm smooth skin. However, our facial collagen production slows down starting in our 30’s and we completely stop making it by the time we are in our mid 40’s. Also, our skin cell turnover slows down dramatically and we eventually stop making fresh new skin cells. Cellular turnover plays a significant role in how our skin looks and feels. The term cellular turnover describes how quickly new skin cells migrate from the deepest layers to the top layers of skin. Slowed cellular turnover leads to a loss of skin vibrancy, lift, elasticity, and firmness. At BeautyEtc. Skin Clinic, we feel that taking a conservative, multi-modal approach to slow the signs of aging yields the best results. We can accomplish SO MUCH with: A great skincare regimen that stimulates timely skin cell turnover A few injectable treatments to beautifully rejuvenate the face, replace the lost volume and gently reverse the aging process Collagen stimulation treatments such as microneedling and Sculptra to replace lost collagen. So even though it seems like you have aged overnight - you haven’t. This process has been going on for a long time. However thanks to the latest aesthetic advancements, we can keep facial aging at bay for a long time.
